Medicine Wheels is a program for Indigenous and underserved youth who are eager to learn skateboarding while exploring the four directions and teachings of the Medicine Wheel—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Over four weeks, the youth will gather at the Youth Center for skateboarding workshops, each grounded in one of the four teachings. The sessions will offer space for movement, reflection, and conversation.
After these workshops, the youth will spend a week on the land at a forest skate camp with Joe Buffalo—Cree skateboarder, residential school survivor, and knowledge keeper. Joe has turned skateboarding into a path of healing, and he now shares that strength with the next generation. Youth will learn not only skate skills but also about resilience, truth, and the importance of carrying culture forward.
To close the journey, each participant will design their own skateboard deck. These boards will reflect their learning, their time with Joe, and their personal visions of truth and reconciliation—what it means to them, and what they believe Canada needs to do to truly heal.
