Indigenous Knowledge to Power

The Indigenous Knowledge to Power team has been actively engaging with the Kapichila community in Lundazi, raising awareness on mental health, disabilities, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), and the power of unity. Through skills training and open conversations, the program has brought positive change in the community.

Sports have played a key role in mental wellness, with one participant noting, “Even when I feel overwhelmed, coming for sports or meetings makes me feel better.” The project has also empowered women and girls, with participants highlighting the shift in perceptions toward gender equality.

One young woman shared, “Before, I couldn’t speak in public. Now, I have the confidence to express myself,” reflecting the confidence building aspect of the program.

The initiative has also helped reduce stigma around mental health. As one participant stated, “Problem shared, problem solved.”

Environmental education, including climate change awareness, has also been key to empowering the community. A local community member expressed gratitude, saying, “We are hopeful that issues like suicide, early marriages, and GBV will decrease because of this project.”

By focusing on inclusivity, gender equality, and mental health, this project is paving the way for a more empowered and resilient community in Kapichila.
