Sharing Our Power: Strengthening the Women’s Movement Through Community and Solidarity

As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD), the team at VIDEA is actively participating in community events across Canada, Zambia, and Uganda. These spaces provide invaluable opportunities to share challenges, exchange solutions, and work collectively toward gender equality.

VIDEA remains committed to uplifting the voices of Indigenous, Black, and racialized women, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities, ensuring that diverse perspectives shape the future of the women’s movement. Through the Sharing Our Power project, the team is leveraging VIDEA’s reach, partnerships, and experience to foster a more inclusive, representative, and sustainable movement for gender justice in Canada.

The project has brought the team into conversations with Elders, activists, and movement leaders to deepen their understanding of the history of women’s movement-building in Canada. Their goal is to strengthen their capacity to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing development of a diverse and resilient movement.

“I’ll never stop being amazed by all the powerful, beautiful women who stand up, speak up, love and support one another, and, most of all, are so eager and willing to teach,” shared Codi, Sharing Our Power Team Lead.

As a majority youth-led organization, VIDEA acknowledges that many young people today have not witnessed a national women’s movement with lasting impact. While there have been moments of progress, sustaining momentum has proven to be a challenge. That’s why the Sharing Our Power team is working to reimagine what women’s movement building can look like in the present day, one that is inclusive, intersectional, and enduring.

VIDEA takes immense pride in the incredible women, 2SLGBTQI+ and gender diverse folx, and feminist men on its team who dedicate their time and energy to supporting their communities. Whether through wellness programs, climate justice initiatives, mental health advocacy, or gender-related interventions, these individuals are driving meaningful change and serving as role models for young people.

At a time when laws and social norms increasingly seek to harm women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities, these challenges can feel overwhelming. However, the Sharing Our Power team turns to their communities for strength, finding beautiful examples of care, kinship, and solidarity.

Their message is clear: We can’t lose hope
